All photos from this article were taken yesterday in Kahuranaki, Hawke’s Bay.
Finally arrived in New Zealand yesterday, it has been a few months coming but the wait was worth it! As the plane flew over the lakes and green mountains of this beautiful country, I started to understand why people come from all over the world to visit.
I will be here for the next 7 days and cannot wait to explore some of the most iconic places in the North Island.
New Zealand is renowned for its abundant nature, breathtaking views and hospitable people. So, when we planned our trip we wanted to find things to do to that would enable us to experience as many of these things as possible.
Here is our itinerary for the next 7 days:
Napier and Hawkes Bay
Napier is located an hour away from Auckland by plane and a few hours drive by car. It is a coastal town surrounded by a beautiful wine region called Hawke’s Bay. Some of the most awarded wines in the world come from this region.
The city of Napier was destroyed after a massive earthquake hit the area in the 1930’s. But the city was rebuilt with an art deco feel and has a unique character that is very appealing to the eye. Napier really has an air of nostalgia that has made me feel like I am traveling back in time.
Tongariro and Lake Taupo
Tongariro and Lake Taupo will be our next stops. There, we look forward to experiencing the volcanos and lakes that make this region very popular. We will be walking for the majority of the time as it is the best way to experience the natural surroundings and the views.
Lake Taupo is also known for its white-water falls that cascade through the lush green forests, so that is definitely something that I will be looking forward to.
Rotorua and Hobbiton
Rotorua is apparently a popular destination here in the North Island. It has many attractions for visitors such as natural hot springs and pools. Rotorua is also a place where you can experience the Maori culture and traditions. I am very excited about this and I look forward to learning more about the people who have populated this beautiful island for thousands of years.
While we are in Rotorua, we will be doing a stop at Hobbiton and immerse ourselves in the world of the Lord of the Rings. This too should be fun!
Coromandel is located in the north part of the island, and we will stop there as we start to make our way back to Auckland. Many people, both local and travellers, come here to see the beautiful beaches and natural hot springs along the coast. Our plan when we arrive will be to drive around and experience as many beaches as we can, and stop by Cathedral cove, a natural formation that attracts a lot of attention and instagrammers from around the world!
As we head to Auckland for our flight back to Australia, we will have one night to spend in the beautiful city and look forward to enjoying the waterfront views and delicious food and cocktails!
